Pads Win!

I don't care what time of year it is or even if the game doesn't count, it always feels good to win.

We yielded a game tying homer with one out in the top of the ninth, but managed to get some baserunners aboard in both the 9th and 10th. With two outs in the 10th, Travis Denker drew a walk, and then Luis Durango entered the game as a pinch runner and promptly stole second base. As it turns out, the SB probably wasn't needed as Kyle Blanks laced a gapper into deep right-center field to end the game (after just missing a homer down the line to LF).

Ernesto Frieri gets the win after a scoreless top of the 10th.

Paul,

What happened with Bell? Looks like he got knocked around a little. Anything to worry about?

No, nothing to worry about. Last year Heath had a 5.62 ERA in spring. It's normal for guys to struggle early as they normally don't have all of their velocity or command yet.

I feel vindicated. If YOU can get away with that post for a Spring Training win, I should be able to celebrate a ST win in casual conversation. You're right. A win feels good any old time.

Your blog is great. Thanks for stickin' with it.

Hi Paul! I'm a big fan of the Padres from Spain! I got really excited when I knew you were working with the Pads and I think that this blog is a great idea!
I'm anxious to watch all the young guys play!

Good luck!

PD: I'm also excited with this first "win".

Is there any chance a guy like Denker (or Antonelli) could play his way into the starting 2B role and force Eckstein over to SS, or do the Padres view Eckstein strictly as a 2B for defensive purposes

a second half ERA over 6 for Heath Bell last season, doesn't worry you at all?

no.

2013 arbitration status takes precedence here. Come on people, .. have we learned nothing?

The distinction between a spring training win that counts vs. one that does not is the dumbest distinction since earned runs vs. runs.
