Late last night we agreed to acquire RHP Edward Mujica from the Cleveland Indians for cash or a PTBNL.
A 24-year old from Venezuela, Edward has spent the bulk of the past three seasons between AAA and the Majors where he was used both as a closer and a setup man. Edward complements a 90-94 mph fastball (sitting usually around 92) with both a slider and a split-finger fastball. This move brings another plus arm to our pen, and this one comes with excellent command - just 2.2 walks per nine over his professional career.
We believe Edward should be a good fit for our bullpen and our ballpark.
We still have a handful of days before Opening Day, so anything can happen, but with all of the recent additions we feel more comfortable with our pen than we did just a few weeks ago.

Paul,
I was reading that the Padres sent Manny Ayala to the Phillies. Is that the precursor to obtaining Happ?
Does it make sense sign Dallas McPherson? In a way, he reminds me of Hairston in that he mashed in AAA, all he needs is a chance. 3b are hard to get, and the guy is available for a waiver claim. In the long run, he should be better than Floyd.
How did J.K.R. boomerang himself back with to Padres?
Matt bleeping Bush was released by the blue jays!
He qualifies as a live arm.
Does the Moorad relationship help bringing this troubled young man back?
At this point, I really want to see if this guy's arm is legit. sink or swim. I hate the guy, but there is talent in the arm, and the Padres need arms.
Yes, I'm sure McPherson could be enticed to sign with a team that would have him 3rd on the depth chart at 3b and that plays in a park that kills LH hitters. He'd probably sign with the Padres for free to take advantage of that kind of opportunity.
Bush will be playing rec league softball this time next year.
We need starting pitching. Did we have no interest in Penn, even for a marginal player like Andino? Are the negotiations with Tampa Bay still ongoing?
Admittedly I wasn't too high on the De La Cruz addition. To me it seemed like an example of just throwing a bunch of darts at the board and hoping one hits.
However, I really like this movie for Mujica. A pitcher with very good control and enough stuff to keep hitters honest. This is the type of gamble I like, I could see him being very effective and pitching in PETCO and the NL should help aid his HR problem
hector,
I really don't want to see Bush with the Pads. Even if he's great (and I doubt that), I don't see how he creates any positive effects with our team.
Let's wish him luck somewhere else and stick with our prospects
Sounds like too good of an arm to be had for cash or a future player? Is this another case of a guy being out of options?
What are the odds of us getting Jeff Niemann?
Paul,
Are you excited to have him?
Just as a general reminder - I'm not permitted to discuss players on other teams. Typically I won't post comments that ask specifically about other players.
hector,
I don't see us bringing back Matt Bush.
Yes, Edward Mujica is out of options.
sdsuaztec4,
You better believe it!
